Oddness

When I wrote about the Memphis basketball affair last week, I didn’t think too carefully about how strange the punishment actually is. I understand that the punishment for this kind of affair (the improper eligibility of a player despite the grades and coaches that are a bit too lenient about such things) is that the team loses all its wins. And the fact that they made the Final Four shouldn’t actually affect that. But it does seem weird to eliminate a team that made it to the Final Four. For example, you end up with a situation where one of the four boxes is simply blank. As though the games never happened. There are threats of seeing this all over the NCAA right now, and maybe that’s the normal way, but I don’t think so. Is this a systemic problem that comes with the large amount of money that has entered into college sports lately? Or is this just a weird time? Or is enforcement up? If you have any thoughts, go ahead and leave them below in the comments box!
