No-longer Fighting Illini
March 20th, 2009 Posted in Illinois, NCAA Tournament, WKU
Western Kentucky had the last laugh last night against the University of Illinois. This is one of the first times a #12 seed has beaten a #5 and they did it in good form. WK had led almost the entire game, and the entire second half, keeping a comfortable lead until almost the end of the game. At the end, Illinois made a late charge, hoping to catch up. It didn’t work though, and the final score was 76-72. Again, this belies how most of the game played out, where Kentucky led by more than 10 points for a lot of time. Illinois had some high expectations coming into this tournament but wasn’t able to make shots when it counted. Illinois was also without Chester Frazier, who was their main defensive leader the entire season and was out with an injury.
