Simmons’ Extra Bones
October 13th, 2008 Posted in UncategorizedThe University of Southern California will most likely be starting their 2008-2009 basketball season without the help of sophomore guard Marcus Simmons. In mid September it was discovered that Simmons was suffering from additional bone growth in his left leg and needed surgery that will sideline him for 8-12 weeks.
The extra bone growth in his left leg is a result of complications of an injury he received last season. On the very first day of practice last year, Simmons suffered a high ankle sprain that limited his playing time and only made appearances in 15 games. He averaged 0.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per 6.7 minutes of play.
With the USC Trojans first basketball game scheduled against UC Irvine on November 15th, even if Simmons’ convalescence is on the shorter side of 8 weeks, it is unlikely he will see much (if any) opening game time. He will still need to get back into game time physical endurance, as well as make sure his foot is 100%.
