On September 5th, Northern State head coach Don Meyer was driving with members of his basketball team towards a hunting lodge when he lost control of his car and crashed into an oncoming semi truck. Police believe that he either temporarily fell asleep or was distracted when he crossed over the yellow median. Only Meyer, however, was injured.

Meyer sustained extensive damage to his left leg and had to have it amputated below the knee. However, the injury has also come with a benefit. During the diagnosis and subsequent surgery for his leg, doctors discovered a slow growing cancer in his liver and bowels which could have been fatal if not treated. So while he may lost his leg, he may have also saved his life.

Don Meyer has coached the Northern State team for several years now. Of all the NCAA coaches in history, he is ranked second with 891 victories. Only Bobby Knight has more.
