Memphis Keeps No. 1 Spot
January 30th, 2008 Posted in UncategorizedThe number one spot of the Associated Press’ college basketball poll was still held by the Tigers (19-0) on Monday, January 28, 2008. This is the second time they have ranked number one; the first was in January of 1983, which they lost after a few hours.
The Tigers rose to the number one spot last week, beating Tulsa and Gonzaga with 46 first place votes and 1,774 points from the national media panel.
The second spot was held by Kansas (20-0) for the second consecutive week, smoothly winning over Iowa State and Nebraska. The other 26 first place votes with 1, 754 points were given to the Jayhawks.
Third spot was occupied by Duke. To date, this is the Devils’ highest ranking since they became first place in the 2005-2006 final poll.
North Carolina fell into fourth spot. It can be recalled that North Carolina was number one at the pre-season poll until Memphis rose to the top ranks.
The fifth and sixth spots were held by UCLA and Georgetown, respectively. Tennessee fell from third to seventh place, losing to Kentucky with 72-66. Eighth spot was taken by Michigan State, which rose up from tenth place.
Washington State took ninth spot, dropping by three places, while Texas rose to two places to take tenth place.
